Probably the most famous Civil War token design, featuring a dog’s head surrounded by the legends Good For A Scent. This example has wonderful medium brown color with ample areas of original mint red and proof-like blue toning. No major marks or damage of any kind are present. A gem example of this scarce token.

This obverse was designed by Merriam and is featured on most of his storecards as well as paired with a few mulings from other states and businesses. The use of the word Scent comes directly from being not able to use the denomination Cent outside of the U.S. mint, so this was a creative way to get around that law.
