A remarkable survivor of this incredibly rare and popular type. The Maris 3-C is a pattern type in the New Jersey series, combining the Immunis Columbia obverse with the NJ pattern shield (Maris C ) reverse. This coin shows smooth dark chocolate brown color with wonderful gloss and generous amounts of original luster. A small scratch is visible on the reverse at 7-8 o’clock but tones in nicely. A true rarity in the NJ series and missing from most major collections.

The Maris 3-C has been famous for over 100 years. A few uncirculated examples still remain today, but are currently secured in private collections and should not be available on the market any time soon. The Ford Collection contained two examples, one about equal to this piece, and one that was well struck but had verdigris on the reverse. This piece was Dr. Maris’ own example, which he graded uncirculated back in the 1800s and his grade is consistent to today’s.

Ex. Newcomer, Garrett, Dr. Maris
