An extremely rare Machin’s Mills die variety, one that has never been offered in public auction. This piece shows nice lighter brown color with some brassy hues in parts on the obverse and reverse. The surfaces have some areas of granularity, but also some areas that are smooth and glossy.
While there is no truly accurate population count for this variety, we are aware of 7 known examples, including this one. The 6 other pieces are firmly held in advanced collections, making this the only example of this die variety a collector could acquire anytime in the near future.
This variety was discovered by Richard August in 1964 and has been missing from many famous Machin’s Mills collections that have sold, including the Mike Ringo collection and the Kessler-Spangenberger, just to name a couple.
An extremely rare opportunity for the Machin’s Mills collector to add this elusive variety to their collection.
